Where am I?

Are You Ready for Some Football and Fitness?

September 07, 2012

Was it Chiefs Red Friday or Broncos Purple Friday? Both! In addition to tons of spirit being on display at Spring Hill Elementary School (SHES), a commitment to nutrition and exercise also was showcased on Back-to-Football Friday.

Well known for its Kansas City Chiefs and school spirit, SHES kicked off another year of focusing on health and fitness at its opening assembly on Sept. 7th. Students and staff were encouraged to wear red in honor of Chiefs Red Friday and literally created a sea of red in the SHES cafeteria.

As a special treat, members of the Spring Hill High School football team joined the fun and gave a presentation geared to encourage healthy eating and exercise. The senior players talked about the importance of nutrition and how the right food choices help fuel their efforts on the field. In addition, players and Assistant Coach Brian Hogan highlighted the importance of regular exercise in order to stay fit, which included one player lifting another as a comical demonstration of bench press.

Besides nutrition and fitness, Hogan along with the Broncos players and a student volunteer tackled the subject of safety. Second grader Thomas Davis was dressed up in pads and a helmet, as the importance of protective gear was discussed. In addition, players demonstrated the proper way to tackle to help ensure safety.

The morning’s opening assembly will be followed up by events throughout the day, tailgating for lunch and an afternoon pep rally. Marcel Kadera-Redmond, SHES physical education teacher, along with the entire SHES staff will continue to plan activities and events throughout the year that encourage students to make healthy choices.

Go Chiefs, Broncos and Colts!
